As a family-run company headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Gebr. Pfeiffer has been a pioneer in the development of state-ofthe-art mill technology for shredding rocks. Around 500 experienced employees continue the passion of the founder, Jacob Pfeiffer. From the motto „long-term development is more important than shortterm success”, new impulses are emerging, that secure the company a position among the technology leaders in the industry. Gebr. Pfeiffer produces machines and systems at the site in Kaiserslautern with a high production depth and, as is typical for the special machine construction, usually with a lot size of one.
Alexander Grill, Director – Manufacturing
We are still producing in-house. The quality benefits mostly from our production depth and it also makes us particularly responsive. This is how we can give our customers an often crucial time bonus. MES HYDRA has become an important IT system for us.
The production of a shredding plant usually comprises of several weeks or months. Thereby single operations can take several days, which makes it very difficult to obtain an overview of the current order progress, as the confirmation slip returns not before the completion of the operation. With more transparency in production, Gebr. Pfeiffer hoped to identify bottlenecks and delays earlier and to react in a timely and appropriate manner.
For this reason, Gebr. Pfeiffer opted for the introduction of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). The MES HYDRA by MPDV was selected as result of a comparison of suppliers, since all requirements could be implemented without modifying in standard. In addition, MPDV also had the necessary understanding of the production processes and framework for standard rates (tariff).
The established, paper-based work label process is extended by HYDRA with a prompt data entry at the terminals, thus providing the necessary transparency in production. Customer orders recorded in the ERP system are converted into production orders with several operations and transferred to HYDRA’s order pool via bidirectional data interface. By scanning a barcode on the work label, operators log operations on and off. Simultaneously, the system records the respective processing times. To ensure that the postings are verifiable, Gebr. Pfeiffer combines the HYDRA modules Shop Floor Data with Time & Attendance. This results in two practical rules: 1. People who have not clocked-in at the terminal cannot make any order postings. 2. If the operator has clocked- out, the corresponding operation is automatically interrupted. In this way, exact and reliable times are recorded and transfered to the ERP system in regular intervals. By evaluating the recorded times, the progress of the respective order can now be determined.
In addition to Time & Attendance, Gebr, Pfeiffer also uses the HYDRA module Personnel Time Management. This enables the usage of common master data and the verification of order postings. Furthermore, all employees profit from a simple and paper-less work flow to apply or record any kind of leave in HYDRA. For example, leave applications can now be transmitted directly to HYDRA via the web-based Smart MES Applications (SMA) and are approved there afterwards by the supervisor. All employees can also check their recorded working hours in the form of a clear time record on the intranet.
