The family business Schmidt + Clemens (S+C) was founded in 1879 and is specialized in the production of high-alloy stainless steel, used worldwide in the chemical, petrochemical industry as well as in the separating technology and turbine construction. Their core competence is in vertical and horizontal centrifugal casting. Currently, more than 1,000 people work in Lindlar (Germany) and in other sites in Spain, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. „Made by S+C“ is globally a synonym for superior stainless steel products and qualities as well as outstanding services.
Requirements to the MES system defined in the workshop were implemented together with MPDV in a very short period. Safety aspects defined by S+C were adhered to by a state-of-the-art IT concept. Apart from homogeneously linking corporate ERP management with the production management level (MES) and production execution level (machines, production lines), MES deals with data from all three areas: production, personnel and quality without requiring any additional interfaces.
In the summer of 2007, Schmidt + Clemens decided to replace their obsolete solutions for time and attendance and access control. Simultaneously, S+C also wanted a system which could be integrated into SAP for maintenance, shop floor scheduling and production control, DNC operation and shop floor and machine data collection.
Therefore, they looked for a modularly structured and powerful MES solution by an established supplier with relevant SAP know-how and a certified SAP interface. After an extensive search, S+C decided in December 2007 to introduce the MES system HYDRA by MPDV, which can be extended gradually and is adhering to the VDI 5600 guidelines. The MES experts impressed with their vast SAP knowledge developed in their in-house SAP Competence Center.
S+C was able to successfully introduce the HYDRA modules Time & Attendance and Access Control in early February 2008 thanks to a perfect preparation and thorough tests by the project team. Since then, S+C has been using HYDRA to collect clock-in and clockout times as well as break times including their transmission to SAP HR via the certified HR-PDC interface. Access to the sites and offices is safeguarded by the Access Control module.
They also decided at an early stage to use further HYDRA modules. Functions for Shop Floor and Machine Data Collection and functions for DNC operation to automatically upload and download machine setting parameters were installed. Almost at the same time, HYDRA Shop Floor Scheduling was implemented for S+C to carry out their detailed planning. At S+C, it is tricky to plan orders as they may include up to 10 interdependent operations, which requires special attention configuring the Shop Floor Scheduling module.
Later, the HYDRA modules Material & Production Logistics and Tracking & Tracing were implemented. All parameters of the production process (e. g. make-up of the melt or machine and tooling utilization) are documented and finally printed in the form of a manufacturer certificate. Functions of the HYDRA CAQ module are used in order to collect the composition of the melt.
