With HYDRA, we can make optimum use of our capacities and always keep track of all processes. The implementation of this system is an important step towards the intelligent networking of our production facilities and technical and personnel processes with the help of information and communication technology.
ter Hürne has been using bespoke software for shop floor management since 2000. To replace this aging system, the company decided in 2016 to introduce the modular Manufacturing Execution System (MES) HYDRA from MPDV – with the help of a management consultant and after an extensive market review. Dedicated replacement workshops with MPDV consultants heralded the end of the individual solution and the introduction of HYDRA in 2017. HYDRA went live in autumn 2018 and after several months of parallel operation, the old system was switched off at the beginning of 2019.
In addition to the HYDRA modules for Machine Data (MDE) and Shop Floor Data (BDE), ter Hürne also uses HYDRA Personnel Time Management (PZW) to record working times and digitalize and optimize the workflow for holiday applications, thus saving paper. The use of production-related HYDRA applications is also geared to reducing the amount of paper on the shop floor. Currently, production orders are transferred completely electronically from the production planning department to the shop floor terminals, which are installed on the machines. This means that production employees and technicians have up-to-date access to supporting documents at all times. Also, the automatic transfer of machine data (numerous presses, varnishing machines and entire production lines for the manufacture of finished parquet) and their display in the HYDRA shop floor monitor ensures a high level of transparency in production.
Both the management and the maintenance technicians value this. Especially technicians profit from automatically generated escalations in case of machine malfunctions. „By installing the HYDRA shop floor monitors, we can now react more quickly to machine malfunctions, initiate appropriate measures and thus save valuable time,“ says Dirk Rabenseifner, Technician for Work Preparation at ter Hürne. By consistently recording scrap quantities and reasons, it is easier to identify accumulations of defects and eliminate them earlier. HYDRA supports therefore a continuous improvement process (CIP) in the company. In addition, unnecessary idle times were significantly reduced and throughput increased.
Apart from the operator terminals, supervisors and technicians also use Android-based tablets to inform themselves about the current order status and ongoing escalations. The Smart MES Applications (SMA) from MPDV are used here. Besides, the collected data is evaluated and visualized in the HYDRA Office Client as well as in the external BI system QlikView.
ter Hürne is pleased with the performance and the stability of HYDRA and also appreciates the flexibility of the MPDV experts. The production staff have also accepted the system well, which is mainly due to the ergonomic user interfaces of HYDRA. The work‘s council was also involved at the start to advise on the introduction of HYDRA.
In the course of the year 2019, ter Hürne are about to introduce other planning components like the HYDRA Shop Floor Scheduling and Personnel Scheduling (PEP). With the introduction of these components, the available capacities will be used more efficiently and all production processes will be perfectly synchronized.
