Data Lake – Smart Factory Glossary

A data lake is a centralized storage system that collects and stores large amounts of raw data in its native format. How this data is used has not been defined yet. Unlike traditional databases, where data must be structured and processed before storage, a data lake also allows semi-structured and unstructured data to be stored without prior adaptation. This offers flexibility and scalability, as data is only analyzed and processed when needed. A data warehouse, on the other hand, is a storage location for structured and filtered data that has already been prepared for specific applications or analyses.
