Process Industry – Smart Factory Glossary

The process industry encompasses industrial sectors in which, for example, liquids or powders are processed to create a finished product. Goods are manufactured using chemical, physical, or biological processes. These production processes are typically found in industries such as the chemical industry, food, or pharmaceutical production.

Manufacturing takes place in a continuous production process. This manufacturing process runs without interruption to produce large quantities of a product. Unlike discrete production processes, where the manufacture of a product takes place in clearly defined, separate steps, in a continuous process all production steps flow smoothly into one another without interruption.
